How To Download Torrents Anonymously? Proxy, Tor or VPN?

BitTorrent and anonymity are not the same. If you really want to keep your activity private, your best way involves routing your BitTorrent connection through an external services – anonymous proxy, Tor or VPN.

A proxy server is an intermediary server that forwards requests for content from multiple clients to different servers across the Internet. Anonymous proxy hides the IP address of the client to bypass geo restrictions, unblock websites

Tor is free software for enabling anonymous communication. Tor is a computer network run by volunteers worldwide. Each volunteer runs what is called a relay, which is just a computer that runs software allowing users to connect to the Internet via the Tor network. messaging or downloading the files.

VPN or Virtual Private Network, is a group of computers networked together over internet. A VPN is designed to provide a secure, encrypted tunnel in which to send/receive the data between the user visitor and website/network. The information sent between the two locations through the encrypted tunnel cannot be read by anyone else.

So, what’s the best choice to anonymize BitTorernt Traffic?

Unfortunately, you will discover that free proxy servers rarely work. Public proxies have slow connection. Proxies do not have much bandwidth. On top of that, a proxy server with an IP rotating system, will not be sufficient to give you anonymity.
Tor is a very slow because your data is routed through a number of relays. ISPs are trying to block Tor relays, making it difficult for some users to connect.

With VPN your BitTorrent traffic will be completely anonymous. The IP will be replaced by IP address of the VPN server. The tunnel of data sending/receiving is completely encrypted and secure. The paid VPN providers offer unlimited speed and u unlimited bandwidth, tons of the servers in many countries, no logging, encrypting and full anonymity. Besides that, they accept Bitcoin and allow users stay anonymous completely. Government agencies cannot see what you are downloading, sharing or torrenting. While using Anonymous VPN you will never receive any copyright infringement letters from your ISP

So, the VPN is the best way to secure and anonymize your BitTorrent traffic completely!

Recently, a part of ExtraTorrent community launched a VPN called by Trust.Zone VPN for safe torrenting. This is a bit experimental project but it cares about safety of ET members and every downloader.
The tool is free to use for 3 days. If test period ends, unfortunately, the service asks for money from you but..... our partners tried to make it as CHEAP as possible - you can catch EXCLUSIVE offer specially for ExtraTorrent Fans for only $3.33/mo (click here) - it's the cheapest price among all popular VPN providers...

You are protecting yourself and saving ExtraTorrent by using Trust.Zone VPN.

Lets make torrenting safer!

Seedbox with a VPN

SirSeedsAlot avatarTwo men are walking through a forest. Suddenly, they see a tiger in the distance, running towards them. They turn and start running away. But then one of them stops, takes some running shoes from his bag, and starts putting the on.

“What are you doing?” says the other man. “Do you think you will run fast than the tiger with those?”

“I don’t have to run faster than the tiger,” he says. “I just have to run faster than you.”

That means any protection may have value if the other guy isn't using any at all...it's the easy targets that are going to be nabbed first. That said, the VPN is the best choice but if you're doing online felonies you will still get caught if investigated by the Feds.

Some of their packages have a free VPN option and others are only a couple bucks a month extra for the VPN.

extremezone avatarfor me the best method torrenting and surfing is sandboxie+Proxy Switcher Pro+few elite good ip's private or public checked as first defence, then i use utorrent-preferences-proxy server a different one than ip existed in proxy switcher, all of them from my country and i get the best speeds downloading/uploading, i never like to give money on something i don't need to, with tor the speed is like x10 slower as my default speeds and with seedboxes on personal torrents takes time that i don't have

oh plus that i live in the middle of nowhere in a country from nowhere, no FBI or laws here haha

oh: did i mention that i have lots of usernames/passwords of my network connections? i use them with a rotation sistem as 3'rd defence, i'm still here after so many years and i will be for the next 50 years at least when i will trancend into a copyright fighter

Shaggynyc avatarI live in the USA, and am now being held hostage by my internet provider. They have pinned my IP address as downloading "copywritten" material and shut down my service last week for 6 hours when I tried to share files using Extratorrent. I now am unable to contribute to my favorite community because they are watching my IP for any downloading activity.
I currently have TIME WARNER CABLE, and will be looking to switch internet providers ASAP.

I have been an active member of Extratorrent for years, and have never encountered this issue. I am going to attempt to download a show now, and I hope I will not be shut down again on internet access.

Sorry for my rant, but I feel only my community here would understand this unfortunate situation.

Embolism avatarHow to Anonymize Torrenting?,it is a good question since whatever you do you are tracked or leave a paper trail as I am sure most have heard before follow the money and using TOR will get you found out via endpoint resolution and VPN`s unless in south America or in a place so remote as to be inaccessible to the feds or any government's perusal are always going to be risky since they in most cases have to cover themselves against prosecution or conviction and given that the NSA,feds or their own Govt are most likely to target them in the first instance it comes down to who you trust to keep you safe.
What is really needed is in my opinion an old problem of security which has been addressed before and which needs to be readdressed for these modern times, for those that remember the start of P2P with Ants may also remember the security it had inbuilt with IRC prefetch and internoding, the latter means to the laymen that when your data is sent over nodes the node behind you closes making tracking you impossible, now Ants p2p was sloooooooow, but this was an early program and it does surprise me that in this time of government big brother No one has thought to rethink the potential of Ants and redevelop it or another program to use the same security to eliminate paying VPN`s who are being paid to be a liability to your own security.

posted by Site FriendET loverSuperman (2015-04-14 00:17:51)
Embolism avatarBTW for those who do not remember Ants P2P it was out when a 4 GB HDD was considered top drawer and dinosaurs walked the Earth,LMAO,decentralised torrenting has long been a requisite employing VPN`s and seedboxes is the opposite of decentralisation since it relies on a 3rd party server to keep you secure.

jumbo71 avatarafter you get your vpn/seedbox , then start looking into using private tracker sites to get your downloads from, these public sites will be tracked once you download them from the links on here and other sites, when you use private sites you have even less chance of being traced....
everything helps ..
keep sharing .

No avatarBest way to make sure that no logs are kept is to own your very own VPS or private proxy.
Get you a VPS server and have the VPN tunnel installed. Easy! Then once a month have everything wiped out and re-installed and you are fresh again.

GeeTee avatarWow! What an assortment of comments, some on-target and some Cowabunga. Someone suggested using TOR, but even TOR recommends you not BitTorrent over TOR since BT clients have a habit of using your REAL IP Address. I started using IPredator three years ago. It does cut my bandwidth some but not that much. Having done some research as well as passing enough emails back and forth with their staff to believe they really do not keep any data that could be used against one of their subscribers. Why keep data when it is not required by Big Brother, anyway?

That is my "Two Cents Worth" and today, it is FREE!

davidhot avatarFrom the Tor Project website "Don't torrent over Tor

Torrent file-sharing applications have been observed to ignore proxy settings and make direct connections even when they are told to use Tor. Even if your torrent application connects only through Tor, you will often send out your real IP address in the tracker GET request, because that's how torrents work. Not only do you deanonymize your torrent traffic and your other simultaneous Tor web traffic this way, you also slow down the entire Tor network for everyone else."

soulex avatarThis is the only review I will ever do here. The VPN launched by ET called Trust Zone.

Trust Zone is an amazing VPN/Program that is extremely easy to use.
Outstanding price around $48 a year, which I bought. I think it has lesser options but the year one is best for your money.

I have been using it for nearly a month now and have tested it pretty thoroughly. The only thing that I have seen that is a slight issue is a DNS leak. Everything I have tried I have been completely hidden except for DNS.
This website can be used to see if you are exposed, use the extended test.

When I run the test while under Trust Zone it showed up with my ISP. Not a HUGE deal, but ET should definitely put in some effort to remedy this soon.
Like I said super easy to use, good encryption, no bugs, cheap, 99.9% hidden. I will be staying with it even with the DNS issue, but I do hope and encourage ET to look into this DNS Leak.

Most of your VPN's will have the same issue with the DNS Leak. Most VPN Providers do not bother it seems. I will definitely recommend ET's Trust Zone to anyone.

posted by (2015-10-14 20:41:00)
soulex avatarOh and another things ET's/TrustZone's customer service was quick and helpful, I tested that too lol!

Also, about the DNS Leak, using the VPN and Tor Browser eliminates the DNS Leak. Yes Tor works great behind the VPN and no it is not slow. I download stuff at 6-8 MB/s, same as if I was behind nothing. Unlimited bandwidth and no download/upload limits.

Say I have a few shares on the go. Can they see my IP and then somehow do a search of my IP to see what else I'm sharing? Or do they have to go to their own torrent client, start a specific torrent DL and then get the IPs only from that? The first scenario is pretty scary because they can see everything you are doing.

I do use a VPN but just interested in this idea. If its the former I will need to arse about with a new IP for each different torrent in case of a failure.

brianic2012 avatarWhy Pay For seedbox or Vpn's there are Many Ways To Stay Anonymous For Free...

Here's a Guide To Follow..

1.Browser Addons Don't Work.(They All Leak Your IP To Your service Provider)

2. Seedboxs and Commercial VPN's ,are only as Good as There User policys ,and Privacy Agreements. (you Should Read These, as You Will Find They all Will DOB You In, if The Feds approach Them)

3. Just Cos You Pay, Doesn't Mean It's Going To Keep You Out of Court! (good Luck Explaining to A Judge, That You Will Pay For VPN or Seedbox, But Not For Legit Services Like Netflix, Stan, Ect)

4.If You Don't Know How to Do It For Free ..Get Legit Services...I Have Netflix on my Xbox, and I Just Change DNS Server For U.s Channels, and it's Very Good.( just Google "Netflix DNS" to Find many Pages on How To do It.)

5.For Ten dollars a month ..Is It Really Worth Ending Up In Court?,or Massive Fines...The Feds Can Get You Thru Anything You Do ..Be Realistic They Do Have Pretty Smart Technicians Working For Them.

6.Your Only Safe, Until You Get That Court Summons ..Then Your Screwed!

Kindly help me with one vpn that I have to pick and please don’t mention more than because it will be confusing for me however some friends suggested me PIA but PIA was not mentioned in the above article. Waiting for the response

A browser extension only works within the browser. So your torrent client will NOT be behind a VPN like this. https://ipleak.net also has a torrent ip test, it can generate a magnet link for you and if you put that in your torrentclient the site will show which ip address is shown to the outside world while you torrent.

@72 knight90
Your ISP can't see what it is you're doing if you're properly behind a VPN, all they see is encrypted data. They can however still count how much data you use. So it will anonymize you but it won't bypass your ISP's transfer/bandwith limits.

BaBaDapper avatarWell Quinkan #61 let's see who the fool is if there is fallout from Russian Authorities seizing PIA servers in that country. PIA say there won't be because they don't log and you will be anonymous using their service. You say there will be because they must keep logs. We have to assume btw there was Copyright infringement going on, and it's not a big assumption to make esp as you also say "while doing something illegal".

1st, not all VPN's "throttle your bandwidth". that's just false.
2nd, if i'm understanding your question correctly, once you disconnect from your VPN, all your traffic, from then on, is not routed through the VPN, (i.e. it's now plaintext). so, the first 10% you downloaded using the VPN will be encrypted but once you disconnect, it's the same as not using a VPN. hope that helps

pops_theoldguy avatarTOR prefers that you not use it for torrents as this cuts bandwidth for others on the relays.
A proxy stores your IP Address on the first contacted server. And can be read. When you log into a website on a proxy, such as gmail, you have given yourself up.
I use NordVPN.
Not the cheapest. Not the most expensive. Does, however, offer unlimited bandwidth on up to six devices. And it always works.
I also first run my traffic through Comodo Secure DNS servers. Also, no logging.
Be well, my friends!

No avatarA proxy server is an intermediary server that forwards requests for content from multiple clients to different servers across the Internet. Anonymous proxy hides the IP address of the client to bypass geo restrictions, unblock websites

Quinkan avatarBaBaDapper #76, If you can show me where I said they must keep those logs please do.
What I said stands, personally I don't give a sh*t one way or the other, if people want to use VPN's & pay for them well that's their business & best wishes to them.
But I believe it's foolish paying someone you don't know & couldn't possibly know was trustworthy so you can "think" you're safe while breaking the law.
Proxy's, VPN's etc. do have their advantages & can add another layer of security for internet users, but if you think using a proxy or VPN is going to make you fully anonymous on the internet...well...good luck with that...

No avatarBasic Inet Education. (wall of text TL;DR below)

is low bandwidth only and not meant for this kind of traffic. It ruins Tor and does ZERO for your 'protection' it's like a normal torrent connection just with really shitty speeds and taxing the Tor service. Just don't and when using P2P (Peer to Peer) to speed up downloads it makes a direct connection from your computer to the 'others' computer. Your IP address of where ever your logged in from is easily visible as this doesn't use Tor to route the direct connection traffic anyhow.

This is literally where all your traffic for one program (or connection depends how it's used) gets sent to another computer on another inet connection. That computer relays all the data from you to where you sent it.. then receives data back and sends you the data back. Anonymous proxies can be 'safe™'. Key things to look for in proxies. #1 all free stuff is CRAP and fishy at best. It costs them bandwidth to relay (especially large amounts of traffic) .. They won't do it for free.. (atleast willingly) without some strings. Key point of any proxy service you have is that they DO NOT LOG connections. The loop hole here is if someone finds your IP for anything questionable, they will come knocking for them.. not you. And if/when they get a court order to release your identity. They don't have logs to release/seize. They don't have to log the traffic, and they can't give them what they don't have. (I use a paid proxy it runs about 5$ a month or less with speeds of over 3.5mb on a residential connection.. not bad)

VPN: This just like an 'anon proxy' again routes your traffic.. all of it.. through another network.. and it acts as your proxy, However it's not done selectively. Literally everything. A VPN can be just as secure as a proxy.
Why I dislike VPN's: Usually most VPN services I've seen tend to cost more per month, or have slower speeds than their proxy counter-parts.
Secondly most of the VPN's have software you have to run to enable their VPN while your using it. Bloatware alot of it (I'm sure there's some decent front end software out there.. I haven't found it) and as I mentioned, it's all or nothing.

TL;DR get a paid proxy without logging enabled that allows torrent traffic (some services explicitly block this traffic type due to data volume etc)

I prefer proxies heavily. If I was to torrent 3 files for example and login and pay a couple bills with my online banking and get some emails from my girlfriend at the same time. VPN routes ALL TRAFFIC when enabled. Meaning .. yes.. provided you have a good VPN service have your ass covered. However they can see everything your send and receive (theoretically they could spy/snoop if they wanted to) so they could .. get encrypted bank transactions, view all your emails and GF's nudies she attached to you on her lunch break. etc as plain text.

I much prefer the granular approach where I can configure my torrent client setup with a proxy and do my 'daily' jive without having them cross paths so to speak.

End note of my wall -o- text:

MAC address spoofing, using your OWN VPN or PROXY is retarded. Feds and the corporations don't use your MAC address..
Only your isp uses it to connect with you. They take note of your IP address your using and can map it to within a couple of houses on a given city block within less than a second. To find exactly what house etc. They just ask your isp.. or court order your isp to tell them.

I will repeat again here.. Mac spoofing does nothing. Using your own VPN or Proxy is retarded and redundant. You can wipe them clean 100 times a day.. it's still from your IP.. which is attached to your home address and the door they will come knocking on.

Mike_Oxhard avatarI agree with Sourgrapes (comment #2), use a seedbox and a VPN.
If your a slightly paranoid, then make sure both the seedbox service and VPN service accept anonymous bit coin payments.
If you're real paranoid, get a no-contract "burner" smart phone that has lots of data and a hot-spot.
Pay for the phone with pre-paid cards purchased with cash so there's no billing address tied to the phone.
Use the phone's hot-spot to access your seed box through your VPN.
If you're super paranoid, wear your tinfoil hat whenever you download.

Noms avatarDO NOT ~ I repeat ~ DO NOT use a free vpn- they will probably sell what info they have on you to make money.

As for a paid vpn – there are plenty of reviews out there so I suggest anyone thinking about a vpn should go and read some. And don’t just read reviews on one site because it’s quite possible that the vpn they say is best is probably affiliated to them in one way or another.

Is a vpn safe? Well, it’s certainly safer than no vpn.
When the authorities in your country start seeking out downloaders the first ones they will go after are the ones who do not have a vpn because they will be easiest to track.
Make sure you sign up with a company who do not keep logs and you should be okay.

I decided to get a vpn a few months ago and signed up with what most people said was one of the best. They were crap !!! Connection was either dead slow or non-existent. After being with them a month I cancelled my subscription and asked for a refund.

So there I was – once again without a vpn. I thought to myself “If ExtraTorrent offer a vpn surely it must be good”.
So I signed up with TrustZone.
It’s not a good vpn – it is a FANTASTIC vpn.
I haven’t had one problem with TrustZone since I signed up and would highly recommend them.

n2kmaster avatarHotHardware just posted that Windows DRM files can rat out your tor connection. I for one have had ZERO trust in tor, cuz the users don't control crap unless you're the exit node and that can see everything you did. First episode of Mr Robot actually touched on this while busting a pedo.

I don't use a VPN nor will i ever do.
I will keep seeding everything i get 500% at 30Mb/s.

No avatarBittorrent over Tor is not anonymous!
explained here -

Also use a VPN to download anything from TOR - or a friend with a Tor browser. Law Enforcement is watching IPs who get it.

No avatarDon't be fooled guys! VPN is a novelty, its a good conversation piece and mothing more, like kids putting on a visor and playing Spiderman in the backyard. People should pay for legit services like Netflix or Amazon instead of wasting money on VPN. Tor used to be amazing but its not what it used to be. If you are living in "one of those" countries where law enforcement don't give a damn what you download, you don't even need a VPN

No avatarWhat would you possibly be hiding?
I have been arrested 1,5 times, my computers confiscated 2 times. Yes I have been seeding torrents. No case about it. The police simply doesn't care about little things like that. They have enough to do with all the scammers and robbers.
I have no need of VPN, except at the times I want to turn off some government router or read their e-mails.
I can't understand what's the fuss about all this hiding.
I download the torrents, I don't hide, and I would watch the new stuff legally if I had the money.
And why da fcuk would I use some "legal" VPN? They have the log files anyway! If I want to turn off electricity for a small town in Canada, I use a passwordless RouterOS in Venezuela!

posted by Turtle (2017-03-14 23:36:35)
Mike_Oxhard avatar@biggerjim, the legal aspects of downloading change a bit when you are torrenting.
This is because when you seed, you are redistributing the content.
With a seedbox service, they download and seed the torrent for you, and they are way faster than your typical internet connection.
Your IP address (not to mention your VPNs IP address) never shows up on any torrent tracker.
Then, you can direct download the file securely through your web browser.
You should still consider using a VPN to keep your ISP in the dark, and it doesn't even need to be a VPN that allows torrenting.
This is because you're not torrenting, your just downloading.

posted by (2017-03-17 13:24:16)
No avatarDefinetely use good VPN. I prefer NordVPN cause of quite low price and premium features. What is important in my opinion it has no logs policy, so you torrenting really anonymously, supports IKEv2, you could use up to 6 devices and you still could access Netflix while many others vpn's are already blocked.
It also support TOR via vpn.
