Security researchers found out that a cyber-attack on the website of the Association of British Travel Agents (Abta) could have affected about 43,000 users, including 1,000 holidaymakers.

The largest travel association of the United Kingdom confirmed that hackers had broken into web servers hosting its website in late February and stole information related to customers of its members, i.e. that of tour operators and the members themselves. According to their estimations, the breach has affected 43,000 people, of which about 1,000 files contained personal identity information of customers of the association’s members.

The Association of British Travel Agents added that most of those 43,000 affected were people who have registered on its website, so the data stolen contained their email addresses and encrypted passwords, which provide a very low exposure risk to identity theft or online fraud.

The Abta CEO personally apologized for the worries that this incident may have caused to the association’s customers or members who might have been affected. He explained that the breach was carried out on the side of a compromised web server managed for Abta through a 3rd party web developer and hosting company. The breach, of course, was very disappointing for the association, and it assured that it was taking every step it could to help those affected.

The Association of British Travel Agents points out that it is not aware of hackers passing the stolen data on. However, both Abta members and their customers who have the potential to be affected were issued a warning along with information and guidance to help keep them safe from identity theft or online fraud.

analogkid6103 avatarAnd they wonder why no one wants to register anywhere. Or does so under false ID. Just another example of why nothing on the WEB is safe

No avatarHow are hackers hacking sites and servers any different from people downloading and sharing torrents...seems to be a bit of a grey area.... steal but don't get stolen upon...

No avatarCan't have anything work related/personal/sensitive on your computer. NSA/CIA/tech companies are putting back doors into everything ruining the internet. This is all by design of-course we know now. They are even messing with external hard drives, etc. DVDs seem to be the only solid form of backing up data. Gotta have 3 computers in each house hold these days... One for spam, one for work online, and one for offline(gotta be careful there also however, some of these computers can be remotely accessed before you even open the box)
